ITALIAN HIGH RENAISSANCE: (Michelangelo, da Vinci)

artistic pinnacle of the Renaissance, refers to a thirty-year period exemplified by the groundbreaking works of art being made in Italy.  A rejuvenation of classical art married with a deep investigation into the humanities spurred artists of unparalleled mastery whose creations were informed by a knowledge of science, anatomy, and architecture. (Leonardo, Michelangelo...)

IMPRESSIONISM: (Claude Monet)

first distinctly modern movement in painting. Developing in Paris in the 1860s with artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and turned away from the fine finish and detail to which most artists of their day aspired; the Impressionists aimed to capture the momentary effect of a scene - the impression objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant.  en plein air painting: Outdoor painting

Post-Impressionism: (Vincent van Gogh)
emerged as a reaction against Impressionists' concern

Expressionism: (Edvard Munch; Frida Kahlo)

a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas

CUBISM: (Pablo Picasso)

most influential art movement of the 20th century; characterized by the use of geometric planes and shapes

Pop Art: (Andy Warhol, Keith Haring...) began in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane mass-produced cultural objects
